Das abgelegene Dorf Gokseong, tief in den bergigen Wäldern Südkoreas, wird von einer Reihe mysteriöser Mordfälle erschüttert. Die verschlafene Dorfpolizei, allen voran Polizist Jong-goo (KWAK Do-won), ist mit den Geschehnissen maßlos überfordert. Als jedoch seine Tochter Hyo-jin (KIM Hwan-hee) plötzlich wie besessen scheint, vermutet er einen Zusammenhang mit den Morden. Mehrere Dorfbewohner*innen berichten zudem von seltsamen Ereignissen rund um einen alten japanischen Mann (Jun Kunimura), der zurückgezogen in einem Haus im Wald lebt. Ein Schuldiger scheint gefunden…

The Wailing hat sich seit seiner Veröffentlichung zu einem modernen Klassiker des koreanischen Horrorkinos entwickelt und den Weg für neuere Okkultismus-Filme wie Exhuma mitgeprägt. The Wailing ist eine Auseinandersetzung mit unterschiedlichen Glaubensvorstellungen, Zweifel und dem Tod geliebter Menschen.

The remote village of Gokseong, nestled deep in the mountainous forests of South Korea, is shaken by a series of mysterious murders. The sleepy local police force, including officer Jong-goo (KWAK Do-won), is completely overwhelmed by the events. But when his  daughter Hyo-jin (KIM Hwan-hee) suddenly appears to be possessed, he begins to suspect a connection to the killings. Several villagers also report strange occurrences surrounding an elderly Japanese man (Jun Kunimura), who lives alone in a house in the woods. A culprit seems to have been found...

Since its release, The Wailing has become a modern classic of Korean horror cinema and helped pave the way for more recent occult films such as Exhuma. Director NA Hong-jin has described the film as his most personal work up to that point: an exploration of different forms of belief, doubt, and the death of loved ones.
